Continuous Partial Attention

At some point I think that we should discuss this article, which addresses the destruction of attention by media technologies such as the internet, text messages, etc. This seems particularly timely because the Faculty Senate is discussing the use of laptops in the classroom.

More on this topic, much more, can be found in the writing of Bernard Stiegler and his group Ars Industralis, which has focused on the political and cultural effects of the destruction of attention.

  1. It would be interesting to compare the rise of "distractive technology" with the diagnoses of ADD/ADHD and the prescription of amphetamines.

  2. That would be an interesting comparison-- I'm actually writing my thesis on the pace capitalism requires and subsequent medication of introspective people/ depression diagnoses of artists. Could be fun to dovetail that into the discussion.
